From colorful altars filled with offerings to vibrant community events, there's a wealth of activities for everyone, encouraging participation and learning about this beautiful tradition.

This year, many heartwarming events are set to take place across Raleigh, Durham, and Wilson, transforming mundane weekends into celebrations of life and memory.
Día de Muertos Ofrenda at Duke Chapel
One of the standout attractions this October is the Día de Muertos Ofrenda at Duke Chapel. From October 3rd to November 2nd, visitors can admire oversized calaveras crafted by talented artists from the Inter-Latin American Artist Collective. Complemented by bright yellow marigolds made of tissue paper and papel picado symbolizing the connection between life and death, this display is free to the public and promises a serene space to reflect and remember.
Day of the Dead 5K: Exercise for a Cause
On October 25th, the Day of the Dead 5K offers a unique blend of fitness and community remembrance. Starting at Centro in Raleigh, runners and walkers can leave offerings at altars set up throughout the course, providing a personal touch to their fitness journey. Expect a lively atmosphere filled with arts and crafts, face painting for kids, and an exciting costume contest, allowing families to engage meaningfully while enjoying a day of fun.
Vibrant Celebrations at Whirligig Park
Also on October 25th, Whirligig Park in Wilson will host a Day of the Dead Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Families can come together to enjoy music, dance, and delicious tamales while participating in an altar contest—a perfect way to immerse in the cultural spirit of the holiday.
Creating Memories Through Workshops
Crafting plays a key role in Día de Muertos, and workshops are available to help participants create their own paper flowers to decorate altars. These free workshops are offered at The Chapel at Dix Park, running from September 14 to October 5. It’s a fantastic way to connect with the artistic aspect of this holiday while also fostering a sense of community and creativity.
Local Love: Remembering Loved Ones
On the evenings of October 25, November 1, and November 2, Historic Oakwood Cemetery will host a series of events titled Día de Oakwood. These gatherings feature large-scale ofrendas dedicated to honoring the lives of those who have passed with special ceremonies, including a screening of Disney’s *Coco* and a vibrant Catrina parade. This three-day event serves as both a celebration and a profound reminder of the connections we share with those who have left us.
